Program note

A transcription of TALARIA for wind ensemble, SWIFT explores mercurial fluidity in a scherzo-like, kaleidoscopic form. Whispering fragments pass between winds and strings in extreme registers before gradually coalescing, accelerating toward the brief emergence of a central theme. The theme splinters immediately into overlapping strands moving through the orchestra at different speeds, tightening through successive rhythmic compressions until crystallizing into a sharply defined 5/8 pulse.

From there, rhythmic conflict drives the music through a distorted waltz repeatedly disrupted by double-time intrusions, eventually giving way to a furious antiphonal exchange of short motives across the orchestra. As the energy contracts and fades, muted trumpets introduce a fragile, jazz-inflected chorale undermined by uneasy percussion, harp, and piano interjections.

Fragments of the theme attempt to reform, only to be overtaken by a more tortured version that gathers the full orchestra into a powerful double climax and blazing brass fanfare. A tentative return in the strings grows through accumulation and acceleration before opening briefly onto a suspended, sea-like episode. Earlier rhythmic compressions reappear, culminating in a monumental unison statement of the theme's opening notes, which suddenly collapses into a dreamlike haze.

Out of the debris, strands of the theme slowly regain momentum, leading to a final jubilant restatement before dissolving once more into an accelerating whirl.
