Pebbles

Program note

PEBBLES was written in the fall of 1998 at the Banff Centre for the Arts for six violinists in residence there at the time.

The work unfolds as a sequence of contrasting episodes built from additive techniques (the first theme takes 35 measures to be presented in full), subtractive processes, or both at once — the end of the piece sees the second theme slowly disappear as one by one the violinists abandon it to join the whirl of the last theme. Canonic processes also abound, from sparse two-voice writing to dense six-part canons.
