Hailed by the LA Times as “an original composer with something important to say”, French composer Philippe Bodin is a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2010 laureate from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A Doctor of Musical Arts from Yale University School of Music, where he studied with Martin Bresnick, he has taught composition in the Yale Department of Music, and at Lawrence and Illinois Wesleyan universities. His works have garnered prizes and accolades in many international competitions (Italy, England, the Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Russia, New Zealand, and the USA). Philippe has received commissions from le Chœur de Radio-France, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, TM+, the International Cello Competition VioloncellenSeine, Orkest de Volharding, the Kungsbacka, Eroica, Mannes, & Mojave trios, the Da Capo Chamber Players, Lost Dog New Music Ensemble, Left Coast, Empyrean, etc. Having lived twenty years in the USA, he has a special relationship with many American artists such as cellist Ariane Lallemand, pianists Genevieve Lee, Thomas Sauer, Adrienne Kim, Eric Huebner, conductor George Stelluto, and ensembles Xtet, Verge, Picosa, Brave New Works, St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, American Composers Orchestra, and Las Vegas Festival Orchestra, among others. Invited in the artist colonies of MacDowell, Yaddo, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and Banff, Philippe received grants and commissions from the Copland Foundation, the American Music Center, ASCAP, Meet the Composer, the Argosy Foundation, and the Barlow Endowment. Previous to his activities as a composer, Philippe studied mathematics, physics, architecture, piano, organ, and voice. An accomplished organist and pianist, he was conducting assistant for ONDIF at the Zenith and Cité de la Musique in Paris, and is a former music director for Opera-Bascule and StudiOpéra. Beginning in the 1980s, he had a 15-year career as a vocalist, singing leads in many operas. A former member of several prominent vocal ensembles, he has explored the repertoires of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. A Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory, Philippe’s other passion is vocal pedagogy. After several years as a professor and coach in New York City and Berlin, he returned to France in 2011. A former professor at the Conservatoire de Montpellier, he currently resides and teaches in Paris, and is a frequent guest specializing in vocal contemporary repertoire in Monaco.
